Starting out in college I learned graphic design. I moved through marketing, advertising and commercial photography before making the choice to pursue fine arts as a career. I was not finding fulfillment in servicing the consumer world, so I set out to voice my opinion through fine art photography, also enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago. There I learned that my voice could take shape in other mediums than photography, so I made ceramic art and holography, in addition to maintaining my photography practice. I found these other mediums very interesting, and they compelled me restructure my artistic practices. At the Art Institute I gained much of the experience I needed with my previously acquired skills in photography. The school opened ways and means of communication and methods of expression through their flexibility.
My artwork changed from being symbolic to abstract, incorporating calm and peace. This is when I became interested in creating installations. I found installation art could cater to all five senses simultaneously. Working with abstract forms to create an environment was inspiring. In doing this, process has become as important to me as the end result. The laborious process of making these types of art interested me, and the project “A Pile of Letters” emerged. The process of producing cyanotypes was intensive, as was the work put into the hand written letters that were superimposed into the images, which were stacked on the ground. The making of the installation was a therapeutic process that used 19th century photography to describe my personal life. I infuse psychology into my art, as human psychology has always intrigued me. One of my installations called “Holographic Universe” evokes questions of perception, being influenced by some of Carl Jung’s ‘Mandala’ theories and universal mandala theories. This art piece also has the ‘Zen’ ambience, which evokes a strong sense of meditation.
My art has taken yet another turn when I began researching cultural parallels. My recent art work has been geared towards my learning of culture and incorporate my growing knowledge and related conversations.
